Community leaders called KUSI’s Michael Turko when a partnership between the city of San Diego and the school district went nowhere. Turko says the city promised to put in a new joint-use park on school district property years ago, but it still hasn’t happened.

The city and the San Marcos Unified School District are making what was little more than a handshake deal official. The two agencies have been sharing their sports fields, gyms and other facilities with each other on an informal basis for years. In recent months, however, city and school officials sat down to work out a joint-use agreement that puts the sharing arrangement in writing.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) broke new ground in this month’s issue of Pediatrics when it issued its first policy recommendation calling for changes in how cities and communities are designed to address the exploding epidemic of unfit and overweight children. Unfortunately, a collection of health and community professionals point out that existing myths and misperceptions could block communities from filling that prescription.
