Marquez group unveils playground plan

A Marquez resident is in the process of creating a nonprofit organization to reopen Marquez Charter Elementary School’s playground to the public during non-school hours. The school principal last month announced that the lower yard, with climbing structures, basketball courts and a kickball field, would be closed because of a lack of a liability agreement between the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Work is beginning on a $24.5 million state-of-the-art sports complex at Luther Burbank High School in South Sacramento, which has a dearth of athletic fields. A joint-use agreement between the city and the school district will open the complex to the community, increasing opportunities for physical activity.

A school for San Diego students in crisis has moved to a new location, causing concern among community members. The city, which maintains a joint-use agreement with the district for the contiguous park, was not informed of the plan to move the school until a month or more after the school board approved it.

Park delayed until 2015

Residents of Pacific Highlands Ranch must wait an additional two years before they can enjoy Gonzales Canyon Neighborhood Park. Plans for the 10-acre park, which will include five acres of joint use land, began two years ago. The city had expected to have the park completed by 2013 but has delayed its development because of funding problems.
